the crunch of baguette.
The smell of salty air. The flick of a lighter and cool puff of cigarette. The view of ancient, hillside castles overlooking rocky, indigo seas. To define Biarritz is to sense it. This elegant, petit surf town in French Basque country borders Spain and reality, with a fairytale landscape and history of opulent indulgence. The surf is as aloof as the residents, providing only when the tide and wind agree, leaving windows for mysterious rendezvous and red wine day-drinking. Tall, arched, deciduous trees line the streets of steepled churches and thatched roof cottages. Be prepared when you buy a peach from the market, it will change your life forever. I can still taste the fuzzy sweetness dripping off my lips. Marathon surfs and 10pm sunsets precursor crisp gin and tonics with juniper berries cheerfully afloat. Crowded beaches lack tan lines and timidity and with patience come peelers from a longboarders daydreams. There's nothing quite like August in the pearl of the Atlantic, and for Woody and me, it was a shiny new adventure.
