billabong | “nature’s dreaming” earth day campaign

This Earth Day campaign for Billabong Women’s was shot entirely on film, using double exposure technique to visually depict our overlaps with nature, as nature. Hawaiian film photographer, John Hook, was commissioned for this campaign for his immense talent and stylistic approach that literally and figuratively blurs the lines between human and environment, evoking the idea that we are not separate from nature. The choice to take an analog approach was with the intention to honor the organic beauty of both the medium and the message, reinforcing a deeper connection to the Earth through artful, unfiltered storytelling.

“We are part of a tradition founded on dreams. We must also attend to nature's dreaming, for nature is always dreaming, unfolding herself in each moment. We dream also - each day imagining ourselves into our own inner nature. In the meeting place between natures, a window opens and we are deeply touched. We remember, for a time, our psychic inheritance, an endowment rooted most essentially in the rhythms of nature. “
